The BBC has officially opened its annual development funds for independent production companies across the UK. Three schemes are available this year, with a total investment pot of £1.25 million.
Companies can apply to one of the following programmes:
Each scheme includes a strategic investment, a dedicated mentor from within the BBC’s commissioning teams and privileged access to internal departments to help companies develop their projects and strengthen their business.
The Small Indie Fund specifically targets production companies with a turnover of under £10 million. This year’s edition also expands opportunities in Northern Ireland, building on the success of the Hot House initiative.
In audio, the Radio Indie Development Fund, now in its fourth year, will continue to support companies with an established track record in radio and podcast production.
As in previous years, all three funds prioritise companies based outside London and those with at least two individuals from under-represented groups in key leadership positions.
Applications are open until 22 December.
David Pembrey, Chief Operating Officer, BBC Content, summarised the ambition behind the initiative:
“We remain committed to supporting smaller independent companies, who play a vital role in the strength of the UK’s creative industries. These funds form part of our ongoing investment in local talent and skills, ensuring we tell truly homegrown stories for audiences.”
Canadian group Stingray has just completed its biggest acquisition to date: the purchase of TuneIn, the U.S. radio and audio-streaming giant, for US$175 million. It’s a major turning point for the Montreal-based company, which now aims to establish itself as a global force in the audio ecosystem, particularly in the connected-car space. Who is Stingray?…
I guarantee: once you’ve watched one sequence of this game, you’ll want to watch them all! Hit The Spot is a radio game played by the team from The Edge morning show. The principle is simple: Dan has to sing a song with the sound off, and then fall back to the right moment when…
Teri Hatcher is returning to Wisteria Lane. But this time, it’s not for a sequel or a reboot: it’s for a rewatch podcast, a format that has been a hit for several years now and is gradually establishing itself as a genuine model for companion podcasts like The Traitors. The actress has launched Desperately Devoted,…
Clever! A passionate fan has created a Spotify playlist that updates in real time with songs played on FIP radio. But by what magic? Radio France is playing the open data game to the hilt (thanks public service). On their developer site, you can access a whole host of data on programmes, guests and stations….
Season 5 of Stranger Things is back after a very long break of over 3 years. Netflix knows this. We’ve all got older (like the cast), our habits have changed, our uses have changed and some of the plot has been forgotten. So the platform orchestrated one of the biggest promotional tours ever for a…
Long perceived as the soft-spoken voice of the British establishment, BBC Radio 4 has been quietly but deliberately shifting its strategy over the past few years. Across Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter) and, more recently, TikTok, the station is now multiplying short formats, humorous clips and debate extracts to reach a younger, more mobile audience. Within the…
