The BBC has officially opened its annual development funds for independent production companies across the UK. Three schemes are available this year, with a total investment pot of £1.25 million.
Companies can apply to one of the following programmes:
Each scheme includes a strategic investment, a dedicated mentor from within the BBC’s commissioning teams and privileged access to internal departments to help companies develop their projects and strengthen their business.
The Small Indie Fund specifically targets production companies with a turnover of under £10 million. This year’s edition also expands opportunities in Northern Ireland, building on the success of the Hot House initiative.
In audio, the Radio Indie Development Fund, now in its fourth year, will continue to support companies with an established track record in radio and podcast production.
As in previous years, all three funds prioritise companies based outside London and those with at least two individuals from under-represented groups in key leadership positions.
Applications are open until 22 December.
David Pembrey, Chief Operating Officer, BBC Content, summarised the ambition behind the initiative:
“We remain committed to supporting smaller independent companies, who play a vital role in the strength of the UK’s creative industries. These funds form part of our ongoing investment in local talent and skills, ensuring we tell truly homegrown stories for audiences.”
